COVER STORY

The cover is a fluorescence micrograph of a gut section from the ‘CHROMA Demo Slides’ series, stained with Hoechst (blue, nuclei), Alexa 488 (red, tubulin) and Alexa 647 (green, F-actin), scanned on the new Olympus VS120 virtual slide system at 20X magnification.

The Olympus VS120 system reates a ‘virtual slide’ that can be easily navigated at a range of magnifications and Z-positions simply by using a mouse. One added benefit of this system is the ability to capture multichannel fluorescence images. This means that samples labelled with fluorescent markers can be thoroughly examined digitally, without any risk of bleaching or damaging the specimen.

The VS120 system is designed with both the high-throughput and defined scanning of samples in mind, capturing up to 5 channels of fluorescence within minutes. Fluorescent scanning is easy to perform, and can be set-up with just 3 mouse clicks, via predefined settings optimised to cover the needs of most users.

The VS120 system also provides multichannel fluorescence imaging across multiple focal planes, ideal for fully documenting fluorescently labelled samples at a range of focal positions. By selecting the virtual fluorescence Z-scan mode, the reviewer can focus through the depth of the virtual slide, just as if they were using the microscope.

The multi-tasking software architecture of the VS120 system allows virtual slides to be viewed in ‘real-time’ as the slide is being scanned, without stopping or slowing down the scanning process. In addition, images can be securely stored and transmitted across the world, making the VS120 system perfect for the safe archiving of slide materials, as well as the sharing and discussion of data.
