Nano Measure 2010 Garners Positive Reviews

Nano Measure 2010, the first annual scientific symposium for users of atomic force microscopes, nanomechanical test instrumentation, and complementary nanomeasurement techniques and technologies, was held June 3-4 in the spectacular Collegium Novum building at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Sponsored by Agilent Technologies, this two-day event featured some of the most prestigious scientists in their respective fields presenting leading-edge, nanomeasurement-driven research.

Agilent Symposium1The symposium drew tremendous interest, boasting 149 international registrants. Thirty-four oral presentations were delivered at Nano Measure 2010. Keynote speakers for the event were Prof. Kunio Takeyasu (Dr. Sci.) of Kyoto University in Japan and Emeritus Prof. Trevor Page (FREng) of the School of Chemical Engineering & Advanced Materials, Newcastle University, UK.

The Nano Measure 2010 agenda comprised four applications-focused sessions:
(1) In Situ Life Science Studies, Biomaterials & Single-Molecule Characterization at the Nanoscale;
(2) Polymers – Nanomorphology, Controlled Fabrication & Property Characterization;
3) Nanomechanical Properties of Organic & Inorganic Materials; and (4) Materials at the Nanoscale – Imaging, Electrochemistry & Electrical Properties.

Prof. Dr. Peter Hinterdorfer (University of Linz, Austria), Dr. Sergei Magonov (Agilent Technologies), Drs. Warren Oliver and George Pharr (University of Tennessee-Knoxville, USA), and Prof. Dr. Marek Szymonski (Jagiellonian University, Poland) served as session chairs. There were also eight guest speakers at the event.

In addition to the 34 oral presentations, 62 scientific posters were displayed at Nano Measure 2010. The winners for best poster, in session order, were as follows: Ana Lorena Morales Garcia (University of Sheffield, UK); Dr. Szczepan Zapotoczny (Jagiellonian University, Poland); Nuria Cuadrado (Fundacio CTM Center of Technology, Spain); and Ling Sun (Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Germany).

Nano Measure 2010 was created to offer an opportunity for researchers across a variety of disciplines to meet and discuss their work in a friendly, professional setting. Participants seemed to appreciate the unadulterated scientific tenor of the symposium:

“First of all, thank you for the good organization of the conference. I enjoyed the talks and scientific contributions and was happy that the organization and the schedule worked out so perfectly.” — Rüdiger Stark (BASF Polymer Physics and Analytics)

“It was a very good event and I was more than happy to come!” — Tim Albrecht (Imperial College London, UK)

“I did indeed enjoy Nano Measure, which I thought was a very good meeting.” — Bill Clyne (University of Cambridge, UK)

Nano Measure 2010 participants were also treated to a wonderful dinner at Wesele (which means “wedding” in Polish), a beautiful Krakow restaurant with rustic country décor serving traditional dishes from the region. A small local group played traditional music during the meal.

Agilent seeks to build upon the success of this inaugural symposium at the next Nano Measure 2011.
