CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE FOR ARTICLES FOR PUBLICATION IN MICROSCOPY AND ANALYSIS

1. Types of Article: Articles can contain: (i) new unpublished information; (ii) previously published information, but not exactly in the same form, or (iii) be a review of a particular field. We aim to maintain a broad coverage of topics and geographical location of authors in order to produce a magazine that appeals to our diverse worldwide readership of 120,000 microscopists. Your chances of publication are improved if you submit an offer of article on a topic that is ground-breaking or innovative. We may therefore decline some offers if we judge that the article is not of sufficiently wide appeal or if a similar topic has been covered in earlier issues. Authors may not normally write for us again within two years of a prior published article.

2. Commercial Articles: Articles with a commercial bias or written solely to advertise a product are not accepted. However, we realise that many companies and for-profit organisations are in the forefront of the development of new microscopical equipment and techniques and accordingly we are are willing to consider publication of articles from such parties if they can demonstrate that the content of the article advances the fields of microscopy and analysis to the benefit of our readership. We will accept articles from microscopy companies and for-profit organisations only if they describe the development, principles and applications of an instrument or technique without promotion of a specific brand. Any references to specific products must be generic, e.g. "the new Smith Confocal Microscope Version 4.0 (TM)" should be written as "the new confocal microscope". No trademark symbols are allowed in the text. These articles will not qualify for our fee payments or free reprints as set out in item 7. Please contact the Editor for advice.

3. Date of Publication: We are now commissioning articles to be published 6 issues - 12 months - from today. In order to attract advertisers, who pay our publication costs and allow us to distribute Microscopy and Analysis free of charge to our subscribers, we always maintain a 12-month rolling schedule of articles. All manuscripts must be received at least 6 months prior to your assigned publication date. Publication dates are not guaranteed. Articles may not always be published in all four editions of an issue of the magazine. Articles which are particularly newsworthy, of high reader interest or that fill a gap in our coverage of microscopy and analysis topics can sometimes be published rapidly. Please contact the Editor for advice.

4. Formatting: Articles must be formatted according to the Guidelines for Authors. Your text and figures will edited to match the house style and fit the space available. Your article must not exceed the page limit. Your illustrations must be at least 1000 pixels wide and set to 300 dpi.

5. Going to Press: Articles will normally be edited and prepared for publication two months before the publication date. The Assistant Editor Joanna Spry will contact you with any queries or requests for further information at this time. Approximately one month before publication we will email you a pdf of the proofs of your article for any final corrections. You must be available or make arrangements to receive, correct, sign-off and return these proofs within one week, or we may proceed with publication without your final approval.

6. Copyright: Acknowledgements must be made to any previously published and copyrighted material. The Publisher, John Wiley and Sons, Ltd, will assume the copyright of the format and content all materials published in Microscopy and Analysis unless there is a declaration that the item has been previously copyrighted by a third party.

7. Payment: We will either pay you for your published article or supply 200 free reprints (subject to item 2). Current rates are US$82 / UK£55 / €88 per page. Fees are paid at rates set by and at the discretion of the Publisher and are subject to change without notice.

8. The Last Word: The Publisher's and Editor's decisions about article acceptance, editing, layout, publication dates and fee payment are final and no correspondence about these matters will be entered into. The information you supply us in this form is used only to determine whether or not you qualify to publish an article in Microscopy and Analysis. Read our privacy policy.
