On Sunday I visited the Carl Zeiss MicroImaging booth and spoke with Jochen Tham and Maya Everett. Zeiss were presenting their comprehensive range of light microscopes that provide one of the best solutions for 3D imaging said Tham, product and marketing manager.
On show were the LSM 780, a recent upgrade of the successful 710 series with new GaAsP detectors, and the VivaTome, a low-end solution that combines the apotome structured illumination system with a spinning disk for fast 3D imaging.
The new Zeiss brochure features a very useful table that compares the specifications and applications of the whole Zeiss range (www.zeiss.com).
For me, the highlight of the Zeiss booth was the new ELRYA S.1, a superresolution instrument based on the AxioObserver that uses structured illumination microscopy (SIM) with photo-activation localization microscopy (PALM) to achieve nanometre resolution. The sytem is named after a bright star that can be resolved as a constellation with a high power/resolution telescope.
Maya Everett (pictured right), Zeiss Product and Application Specialist for Laser Scanning and Superresolution Systems, explained more in a video interview.
